If a tooth in your smile has been knocked out or lost to severe tooth decay, it can leave you feeling self-conscious in social settings. Rather than installing a bridge to restore the tooth’s function and appearance in your smile, Smiles of East Lake’s dentists will often recommend installing a single dental implant to restore the individual tooth.

We will start by examining and X-raying the area to ensure there is sufficient bone structure to mount an implant. It also helps to assess the health of the surrounding teeth.

A dental implant can be installed on an outpatient basis and often requires deep sedation. You will need to arrange to have someone drive you home afterward, and lend a hand until you’re back at full strength.

To install the dental implant, a small incision is made in your gums. A narrow channel is then drilled into the bone and a titanium abutment is screwed into place. A hard plastic temporary crown will be secured over the abutment to protect it. In time the titanium abutment will naturally fuse with the surrounding bone material.

Later, a Smiles of East Lake dentist will take an impression of the abutment and start the process of having a dental lab create a permanent crown. Once the crown is cemented in place your new dental implant should restore the missing tooth in your smile for a long time to come.

If you’re missing a tooth in your smile, you should call Smiles of East Lake’s office in Chula Vista, California at 619.482.1962 to discuss your treatment and restoration options.
