We all know the importance of taking care of our teeth. If we don’t practice adequate oral hygiene, it is much more likely that we will have problems with tooth decay that can be unpleasant to deal with. But our oral hygiene is just as important for maintaining the health of our gums. Gum disease can have terrible consequences for our entire mouth.

Gum disease is an infection caused by bacteria in the mouth. Its initial symptoms are fairly benign and painless, but given time, gum disease can destroy not only gum tissue, but cause bone and tooth loss. It is one of the most prevalent oral health issues, and is quite serious.

The best way to treat gum disease is to prevent it in the first place. This is where good oral hygiene comes into play. By removing plaque and bacteria from the mouth, gum disease has no foothold. So be sure to brush your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes each time, and floss at least once. You can also use an antiseptic mouth rinse to kill additional bacteria.

If gum disease does develop, early treatment is best. At Smiles of East Lake, we provide deep cleanings designed to stop the progress of gum disease by removing built-up tartar below the gum line and making it more difficult to accumulate in the future. These non-surgical treatments are not designed to treat late-stage gum disease.
