Today, our Smiles of East Lake team is pleased to share oral health concerns with you, particularly since October is National Dental Hygiene Month. You see, as we age, our dental care is just as important as ever. Your body isn’t the only thing that suffers from time, your smile is vulnerable as well. Let’s look at three things you should watch out for.
-Gum disease is a very serious gum infection which harms the gums and can even destroy the jawbone. This is why your daily oral hygiene routine is so important, as brushing and flossing remove harmful bacterial plaque that can build up on your teeth. If it isn’t removed, plaque hardens into tartar and ultimately cause irreversible damage to your jawbone, leading to tooth loss. Always stay on top of your daily hygiene, and see your dentist every six months to remove tartar to win the fight against gum disease.
-Oral cancer, particularly for men over 40 is a viable threat to your oral health as you age. Both tobacco use and alcohol use contribute to cancers of the mouth, tongue and throat area. Did you know that most oral cancers are initially diagnosed by your dentist during a routine exam? Limiting your tobacco and alcohol use and seeing your dentist regularly can save your life.
-Dental fillings will weaken and break down over time. Dental fillings generally last from eight to ten years, but they can last up to 15 years depending on their material and good oral hygiene habits. When your fillings break down, this allows food and bacteria to get under them to promote tooth decay. Brushing and flossing daily help your fillings last longer, and seeing your dentist routinely will spot problems with your fillings early on.
